Whoopi takes a rap for Mel Gibson defense, anxiety meds

Whoopi Goldberg has been making all kinds of headlines in the past weeks, first for her defense of Mel Gibson and second for apparently being high on anti-anxiety medication during a taping of The View.

Mel Gibson was recorded by ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva as saying that she dressed too sexy and would get “raped by a pack of ni**ers.” Gibson also repeatedly called her a “whore” and a “c**t” and made threats to burn her house down.

On The View a couple weeks ago, a very earnest Whoopi claimed that Mel Gibson is not a racist, despite the recording.

“I know Mel, and I know he’s not a racist,” Whoopi said. “I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he’s being a bonehead, but I can’t sit and say that he’s a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don’t like what he’s done, make no mistake.”

Just two weeks after standing up for Gibson, Whoopi showed up drugged on The View. Between laughing fits, Whoopi confessed that she just got back from a plane ride from Vienna and she has to take medication to travel. (You can see a clip of the show here.)
